What is CBD and how is it different from cannabis or hemp?
Here are more details on their properties, links and differences:
1- Hemp or cannabis is the scientific name for the plant "Cannabis sativa". It has several varieties which differ in their THC content. THC is a psychoactive and toxic molecule. Species with a very low THC content (-0.2%) are used to make textiles, ropes, paper or to extract CBD.
2- CBD or Cannabidiol is a chemical compound of hemp or cannabis. It is a natural substance offered in edible or cosmetic products for well-being. CBD is not psychoactive, its consumption does not "make you high" and does not lead to addiction.
CBD was approved by the World Health Organisation in June 2018* in a report describing it as safe, non-toxic, well-tolerated and not causing public health problems.
The effects of CBD make it an effective product for everyday well-being:
- Anxiolytic: it calms anxiety and stress.
- Anti-inflammatory: it limits immune responses and oxidative stress
- Pain medication: it reduces acute or chronic pain (headaches, migraines, arthrosis, etc.).
- Antiepileptic: it reduces the frequency of attacks by at least 50%.
The properties of CBD also help to solve problems related to appetite or memory problems (such as Alzheimer's disease), or to overcome nausea and side effects due to heavy medical treatments (such as those against cancer, or post-operative protocols).
CBD-based products come in a variety of forms: edible oils, drinks, chocolates, sweets, biscuits, massage oils, creams, balms, soaps, capsules and much more. Edible products containing CBD are very popular and their effect is faster than others because the mucous membranes of the mouth absorb it, especially CBD drops or CBD oil.
In short, hemp and cannabis are the same plant, but it has many varieties with different THC levels. CBD and THC are molecules that are extracted from it, but each has different properties and effects :
